Direct TV Cable and other television providers pretty much give you your pick of any kind of reality show you could ever want. You can find reality shows about motorcycles, the restaurant business, makeovers, surviving on an island – there are a lot out there.
But is reality TV really all that real?
It depends on your definition of reality. The people handpicked for the shows as contestants are most certainly real and the situations and actions that occur are real, for the most part. However, you might have noticed that, when the credits roll, you see quite a lengthy write staff.
Why would reality need writers? Your life is real and you don’t have writers telling you what you’ll say or how you’ll verbally react.
That’s where the “reality” in reality television tends to get a little more complicated – it’s where reality becomes sensationalism. Anyone can react to their car getting a flat tire in the Amazing Race by shouting an expletive, but which one? Which expletive hits closer to home and gets viewers turning their heads? That’s what the writers decide and it might surprise you to know that the reaction you get in the final product might be the result of a take two or even three.
The fact remains that reality TV is about as real as it can get for television. But, in the real world, there are no camera cuts or re-shoots for reactions and dialogue.
When you hear the title “Reality TV”, you would almost always assume that it is a show that is “unscripted”, in other words no “prewritten dialogue”. Right?
